Greetings. My name is Laura. I found RenSpace a couple of years ago when I created a profile for the SKRF (now End of Seasons). Now that my involvement in the festival has changed, I thought it would be a great idea to create my own profile.
I started going to renaissance faires a few years back, shortly after becoming involved with LARPing. It's hard to make LARP friends and not go to faires. My very first faire was the New York Renaissance Faire in Sterling. I've been going to at least one faire a season ever since. One of my favorites is the Maryland Renaissance Festival. It's been years since I was last there, but I still hold fond memories.
Three years ago my faire involvement shifted from faire-goer to volunteer worker. The LARP with which I had play for years decided to start their own festival and the Silver Kingdom Renaissance Festival was born. In 2006, the festival was held for one weekend and I spent most of that weekend behind the bar, serving food and drink. In July of 2006 I agreed to take on a larger role in planning and became the merchant coordinator.
I had no idea what I was about to get into. Add to the fact that I was pregnant through most of the planning process, it was an interesting time. I loved the job. As much work as it was, I learned a lot from working with the merchants. The greatest thing I learned was that the ren faire community is a family. I continued on as the merchant coordinator for 2008, learning that there really is no break between one year and the next where planning is concerned.
Going forward, although I will no longer be merchant coordinator, I will still have involvement in the SKRF. I love the faire and the people. I'm sure to be working behind the bar at times next year. I'm thinking of doing something more at the faire. My mind has been spinning with ideas for things to do.
I want to stay a part of the ren faire community. It's an amazing community to be a part of. As Alex is getting older, we'll be traveling New England to visit other faires. Sometimes, it's fun to just enjoy the faire without having to do anything.
